It was December last year when Bolly beauty Anushka Sharma got hitched to Indian skipper Virat Kohli and in the process, gave girls across the nation major bridal fashion goals. From her soft pink bridal lehnga, her beautiful hairdo, to her look for their Mumbai reception, everything has since inspired brides-to-be to model their look on similar lines. We spoke about the trend with a number of city makeup artists and newly-wed women. Here’s what we found.

“The look has been trending post the Anushka-Virat wedding and most brides in town prefer to part their hair in the middle and go for a flat bun like the actress,” says city-based makeup artist Kaushik of the Kaushik-Rajat duo. The duo, however, said it’s not that every bride wants the complete look replicated; some prefer to go for just the smoky-eyed look, and some, just the flower-studded bun. According to them, though Bengali brides prefer to dress in a traditional way on the wedding day, they usually experiment with the reception look. “During postmarriage parties, brides now want to wear light-coloured lehngas like Anushka,” adds stylist Rajat.

Among all of Anushka’s outfits, everyone loved her look during the Delhi reception. Wrapped in a red and gold Benarasi sari, the actress teamed it with an uncut diamond choker and jhumkas.

“I too wore a sari designed by Sabyasachi Mukherjee on my wedding day, as I wanted a very Bengali look,” says Sonam Bhattacharya, who got married in December just before Virushka. As it is, red Benarasis have always been the first choice for Bengali brides. But things have changed a bit after Anushka’s wedding. “Brides now prefer light makeup with dark eyes even if they are wearing traditional outfits. A neat, flat bun and red Benarasis are trending,” says makeup artist Nabin Das.

Sudeshna Chatterjee looked stunning in a bright red sari and flower-studded bun on her wedding day. But the show-stealer was her large nose ring, a la Anushka. “Though wearing a nose ring has become a trend after Anushka sported it, the one I wore is a family heirloom,” Sudeshna tells us.

“For the reception day, brides now want to team a flower-studded bun with a lightcoloured lehnga,” says Prasenjit Biswas, a bridal makeup artist. But the simplicity of Anushka’s makeup has earned the most fans. “I loved Anushka’s simple yet flawless look. Since mine was a night wedding, I did the smoky kohl eyes with minimal makeup. I just wanted to focus on my eyes and lips. So I infused my own ideas too,” says Ruby Mondal, who got hitched recently.
